The Great Gun Controversy

Nope! I like it and that and a ladder rack will give me one "hell" of a war wagon. OK every one help me think this through. Thompson Center Fire Encore. I am thinking 50 cal black powder and then maybe a 45-70 or 308 or maybe 30-06 as a heavy caliber single shot. Here is the link to TC http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/encore.php

That is a sweet shooting system. I think I would get the ProHunter, with the 209/.50 muzzle loader barrel. Then I would get a really big, lower range round like the .45-.70 (or if you were feeling like serious overkill, the .460 S&W).
You have a sweet long range scoped rifle, so I would keep this one open sights and use it for under 150 yard situations.
That way either barrel would be fantastic on land like Ray's. Shorter ranges, but with more escape cover so you really want them to fall down right there.

I agree with Pat. Get the Muzzleloader then upgrade to a centerfire barrel later. I disagree only on two points. A .460 S&W is not as powerful as a .45-70, it is a handgun cartridge. Don't get me wrong it is a damn powerful handgun cartridge that pushes a 200 grain bullet at 2200 fps, but it is still a handgun cartridge and is only designed to be used at less than 100 yards. With the new line of .45-70 govt. ammo from Hornady, you get effective kills at 200+ yards(range is thus really only "short" by your skills with open sights). Another thing to consider is price and availability of ammo, as well as variety of available loadings. As far as I know you can only buy .460 S&W in one loading commercially, and it is very limited and pretty pricey. Of course I'm a bit biased as a .47-70 owner, but I only speak the facts here.

One more thing, I also agree with p.p. that you should get a big caliber when you get a centerfire barrel. Being a single shot gun, its nice to know that if you hit it, its gonna have a lot bigger hole in it, and probably fall down because of the shock. Great for hogs and elk too...

I was out at Dakota Archery and checked prices. The ProHunter goes for $650 plus change. The one below it goes for 100 t0 150 less. It looks to me that the big difference is in the stock and not much else. The weapons seem to function about the same. Or am I missing something here?
Oh and I think I have found a way to finance this little venture ah doing the Lord Work can sometimes pay off.

Oh yeah, I didn't realize the difference. After looking further, I actually like the Encore better. You have a couple of choices less in calibers, but still a big selection. The stock on the pro hunter looks sketchy to me anyway. The pro-hunter has a fluted barrel(whoop-de-frickin-do). I say go for the Encore, besides its been around for a while and has gotten good reviews.

Yes go with the encore if you can get it in 338win mag or or 358 h&h that is is big enought for all north america and still get great range. 45-70 is nice but it is limited to short range.

Phil the deerkiller said...

sorry boys I ment 358 winchester not Holland & holland But the 375 H&H would be a nice roung too. To bad they don't make it in a MAN ROUND like 470 nitro exp.

Chris said...

Actually, the Encore IS available in 375 H&H mag. But alas is not in 358 win. But holy shit, have you seen the prices on 375 H&H rounds! Yeah, try $70 per box of 20. But I suppose if you need to kill a woolly mammoth then you might need 2870 fps and 4937 ft-lbs at the muzzle. H-christo! I argue again that one might want to consider a practical round(for hunting in North America) that is available in a variety of loads and is cheap to shoot at the range now and then. How about 300 Win Mag or 30-06? Of course I still say that the hole you can put in an animal with a .45 cal round is gonna make finding it a lot quicker...

All other practical arguments withheld, a double barrel .470 nitro express would be pretty kick ass...

Phil the deerkiller said...

Yes I know that rounds can be pricey but if you hand load the price is cut in 1/3. And I found a 470 nitro for sale will anyone lend me $12,000.00
did I mention this one is used.

Well, if were going to spend that much, we may as well get a .50 BMG or a PSG-1. I'd love to knock over a deer from half a section away sometime.
