A time waster for those of us who wish we were freezing our n*ts off hunting in SD rather than working...

NEW STAFF!
We are proud to announce 2 new staff members to "Akkerman Acres". The first, of course if you have not heard, is Ryder Lee Akkerman, born July 21 to Ryan and Cathy Akkerman, who live near Princeton TX (Dallas Area). It will be a couple of years before Ryder can do much hunting, but we will do everything possible in instill the love of hunting and the outdoors in him. He already can drink and fart, so he is already as good a hunter as some of us(no names mentioned).
The second staff member is "Rusty", a young dog of unknown parentage, who appears to be about 10 months old. Rusty showed up at the farm about a month ago, thin, but very friendly. We had to go back to Nebraska, so we did not feed him, hoping he would go back to his home. When I came back 10 days later, he was still there, by now very, very hungry. We decided to start feeding him, and with Terri's approval, will be keeping him. He must have been abandoned by someone, as he had no collar, and no ID chip.
Rusty appears to be a Red Lab, with some possible crossbreeding. He has a very distinct dark line starting at his nose, and going all the way down the back, ending on the tail. Rusty seems to have had some initial training, as he is housebroken, sits on command, etc. He travels well, having made 2trips to Nebraska, and one to Texas. He has very good hunting instincts, and will retrieve and drop at your feet anything thrown, both on water and land. He points at things he smells in the grass, and is able to work out a scent trail in tall cover. When in the water, waiting for an object to be thrown, he swims almost vertically, with half of his body out of the water, so he can see when the object lands. (see picture)
He is already ahead of me on pheasants for the year! When I was working near the barn last week, he brought me a gift, and laid it at my feet. When I looked down, it was a young pheasant, just able to fly. It ran away, and he went and brought it back, and released it at my feet again. I finally had to hold him, so the bird could get away, maybe we can find that bird again next fall.
I hope to spend quite a little time with Rusty this fall, doing more training. If anyone has any advice, or wants to recommend a good training book or video, please let me know. I am considering sending him to a professional trainer, should we wait and see what he can do naturally first?
Waiting for Fall,
The Old Farmer
He looks like a good dog. I hope he hunts good to. Old farmer are the IL boys coming up to hunt this year. I still don't know if I'm going anyplace out of FL to hunt this year or not. but I promise I won't miss 2 years in a row. P.s. the Deer in FL taste Like swamp grass and crap mixed.
