new deer stand in the south slough

Dad is just about done with the second deer stand, this one will replace the stand that we had in the south slough which just had 3 sides on it. Any thoughts on exactly where to put it? Same place? other?

Well, that clearing in the south slough is about 200 yards E-W and a little less N-S. The old stand sits about 65 yards south of the north edge right in the center E-W. That makes any shot around the edge no more than 150 yards. I suppose if it were a little closer to the south edge you would have a better view "down in" the slough, but probably wouldn't be worth digging new post holes. Its also a bit of a reach to shoot into that opening SW, so being a little more SW might be nice. I'll post an air photo for those that don't have as good a memory as mine ;)

By the way, where did the 1st one end up?

I don't think that dad has put the first one in yet either...

I think the same spot would be the easiest. If he plains to use the old posts but if new poles are in the plain then back it up to the south 15 to 25 yards so that you could get a better view of the slough to the south and the north will still be open.

I agree, south and maybe west 20 yards. Phil and I were just chatting and thought we should put a stand of some sort in the north shelterbelt too. We saw many deer cross that belt last year.

Just a few comments on stand placement/height. If we move the stand too far in any direction, we will loose the height advantage, as it is now just about on the highest spot anywhere for several hundred yards. If we move south, I would have to plant around it, and I don't think that being in the center of the food plot would work too well. The poles we have are 12 feet high, with a minimum of 3 feet in the ground, that puts the base of the stand at 9 feet. Is that high enough? We could extend the poles 2or 3 feet quite easily.
The 4X6 stand will be placed where we put the single straw bale last year, overlooking the big pond, which is dry again this fall. I saved enough straw bales to make a nice 2 story stand from bales. We will probably place that where the 4-way gates are, where the 3 quarters touch.
Hope to see you guys soon, the Old Farmer

ok, didn't realize that there was going to be a food plot just south. Yep, leave it right where it is then. As far as height, I wouldn't worry about it too much, whatever works easiest.
